CommuteSmart –A Service for Commuters

The CommuteSmart program began in Birmingham, Alabama as a solution to growing traffic congestion. As an alternative to a single occupied vehicle, the program provides commuters with the tools for ridematching and starting carpools. The various services available help commuters lower their personal commuting expense, reduce the wear and tear on their personal vehicles, and lessen their level of stress traveling back and forth to work each day.

In 2005, the City of Birmingham and the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) began looking at expanding the CommuteSmart program to the entire State of Alabama. Mobile was one of the first cities to join the program.
